Foreshore Planning Up in the Air
Monday, 3 November 2008
Within weeks Glebe Island will be closed to stevedores and car imports, though just what will replace them remains a mystery. Proposals for the area have included a new fish market, tennis stadium and even a Disneyland fun park. A wide variety of proposals have also been put forward for the redevelopment of Rozelle Bay and the White Bay power station. Local residents are now anxiously awaiting the release of a draft master proposal for the sites from Planning Minister, Kristina Keneally.
One element that will be central to the plans is the development of a station for the new metro rail system. The proposed $4 billion metro rail system would form a loop taking commuters from Rozelle under White Bay to the new financial district of Barangaroo and then on to Martin Place, Town Hall and Central. The system will need federal funding to proceed and construction is not expected to start until 2010.
