Smarter Planning Needed for Sydney's Growth
Monday, 1 March 2010
Rozelle residents are celebrating the scrapping of the $5 billion dollar Metro that threatened to put a major hole in the heart of the village and forever change the character of the suburb. While sense has finally prevailed, the government will now have to reimburse many millions of dollars to compensate companies that were involved in the maligned project.
Residents of Glebe and Forest Lodge now face a new battle, with the government considering plans for the redevelopment of the Harold Park Paceway. Now on public exhibition is an early draft for the rezoning that shows up to 1000 dwellings being constructed on the site in buildings up to eight storeys high.
While there is an undoubted need to find room for Sydney’s growing population, a sensible approach to planning is required. For too long policies have created further congestion in the inner suburbs while failing to provide the required infrastructure for Sydney’s growth corridors.
